ACTIVITIES IN AND AROUND THE WATERS OF HALIFAX HARBOUR AND THE BEDFORD BASIN,NOVA SCOTIA
Bulkcarrier MALMNES called at Halifax again for bunkers this week, clearing the Port early on April 19th. She is a regular caller on her runs North from South American and Caribbean destinations. Built in 1993 in the Netherlands, she is owned and operated by Erik Trun,A/B,Sweeden.
On 16th April 1945 the Royal Canadian Navy minesweeper HMCS ESQUIMALT was carrying out a routine sonar sweep in the approaches to Halifax when she was torpedoed by German U-Boat, U-190,rapidly sinking before a distress call could be sent. Fourty-four of her crew were lost before rescue, most from exposure. With the war ending with Germany within weeks the loss of so many so close to home was particularly heart rending. Such is war. The U-boat surrendered to the R.C.N at wars end and eventually was used for a time by the Navy.It was sunk by RCN ships and aircraft on Trafalgar Day a few years later just off Halifax.
Containership OOCL ANTWERP called at Halifax again today April 3rd 2011.She is shown her on her first call at Halifax on 23rd January this year.
